2019 DMWD Winners

2019 DMWD winners Didier Germain and Daniel Hein

After the season kicked off at Mattagami First Nation, anglers were back in action at the 2019 Dubreuilville Magpie Walleye Derby.  The sold-out field of 125 teams covered the waters of the Magpie River for winning weights of walleye.  At stake were the top cash prizes, Angler of the Year points, and qualification for the 2020 NOWT Championship.

Day 1 of the tournament greeted anglers with fair weather and ideal fishing conditions. At the end of the day, the team of Mark Lytham and Phil Nadjiwon lead the day with over 16 lbs. of walleye weighed in.  The weights illustrated a tough day of fishing as only 8 teams managed to weigh in over 10 lbs of fish!

Top 3 teams on day 1 (weight in pounds)

  1. Mark Lytham & Phil Nadjiwon (16.18)
  2. Trevor Bernath & Travis Gendron (15.51)
  3. Steve Johnson & Jake Pepin (12.25)

Sunday’s weather was a repeat of Saturday’s. Could those who found success on day 1 repeat the pattern, and would those who struggled figure out the secret to heavy walleyes? Turns out day 2 was significantly tougher with only the top 3 teams for the day weighing in over 10 lbs of fish.  Only 19 out of 125 teams managed to weigh in over 5 lbs!  That’s tough!

Top 3 teams on day 2 (weight in pounds)

  1. Daniel Hein & Didier Germain (11.60)
  2. James Smedley & Petar Kusic (10.91)
  3. Steve Johnson & Jake Pepin (10.85)

Two days of almost exactly the same weight gave the winning team a total weight of 23.23 lbs., with only a 0.13 lb (2.08 ounces!) advantage over second place!

Congratulations to Daniel Hein and Didier Germain, winners of the 2019 Dubreuilville Magpie Walleye Derby!
