2023 Mattagami First Nation Spring Walleye Tournament, the first event of the year started things off with an exciting weekend of competition.

82 teams of 2 anglers attended the rules meeting on Thursday night with anticipation for another great start to the season.

Clear skies and warm weather highlighted take off on Friday morning for the live stream (now a recording) hosted by Andre and Chantal while Crystel filled the role of drone pilot.  Team 36, Miguel Tailleur and Denis Gendreau, took advantage of a five minute head start.

After day 1, the team of Nick Huckson and Jason Doyon managed to weigh in on top of the pack with a 16.70lb bag of fish.

Day 2 saw smoke from the region’s forest fires rolling in, but that didn’t stop our team from taking off safely on time.  Everyone was anxious to see if the top teams could hold on, or if it might be a day of opportunity to improve results.  The Streamside Cool Under Pressure winners Jacob Gauthier and Mitch Cousineau proved they had what it takes to make big moves!

Leading the field on day 2 was the team of Kit (Chris) Porteous and Tim Martel with a catch weighing in at 13.61 lbs added to their Day 1 weight of 13.34 proving consistency pays off!

Despite their heavy bag from day one, the team of Nick Huckson and Jason Doyon weighed 9.66lbs on Day 2 to secure a solid 2nd place finish with 3rd going to another consistent team, Jody Villeneuve and Chad Vis who weighed 13.36 and 12.56.

A big NOWT congrats goes to Kit (Chris) Porteous and Tim Martel on their win at the 2023 Mattagami First Nation Spring Walleye Tournament.

** Great news was released shortly after this article was drafted and has been added here – MFN Fishing has confirmed the return of this Spring Walleye Tournament in 2024.  The NOWT thanks the amazing committee and community that host this event each year and can’t wait to be back next year!
