The Town of Kapuskasing welcomed a full field of 110 teams at the Sports Palace this past weekend for the Kapuskasing River Walleye Tournament (KRWT). The KRWT is the fifth stop of the NOWT circuit.

During the rules meeting it was announced that the 2020 NOWT Championship will be held in Kapuskasing, together with the KRWT. Only 25 qualifying teams will fish for major championship prizes next August.

Anglers descended upon the Kapuskasing River at the Fredd Flat launch, a 22 kilometre drive north from the town. Boats lined up at the start area waiting for the horn to signal the start of the take-off. Boats spread out across the length of the Kapuskasing and Mattagami Rivers hunting down the largest weights of the weekend to cash in on top prizes and valuable Angler of the Year and Championship qualifying points.

Saturday morning greeted anglers with fair weather. Winds from the southwest and a mix of sun and cloud throughout the day. By the end of the day, the leader board was set.

  1. Patrick Martel & Mathieu Isabelle (17.02)

Sunday started calm, with overcast sky and light rain.  As the day progressed, dark clouds made their way in, with heavy rain in the northern parts of the Kapuskasing and Mattagami Rivers.  Top teams Saturday tried to maintain their leads to secure a win, while struggling teams hoped to make up weight to land prize money, and maybe even win the tournament.

  2. Chantal Cauchon & Ken Perreault (14.51)
