I would like to introduce a young angler I met and competed against some years ago when he fished some tournaments with his father, six-time Northern Ontario Walleye Trail Angler Of the Year Jamie Robinson.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to watch his journey and experiences in the outdoors through his videos on YouTube, where he is called Bush Kid. He has an eagerness to volunteer at tournaments, doing live interviews on Facebook from one of the Mattagami First Nation Spring Walleye Tournaments, starting his own guiding business in his home town to now qualifying for the first NOWT Championship by competing in three NOWT events this season with the help of his tournament partner Dylan Buckell, who he had fished two events with and the third with his father Jamie.

It is my pleasure to introduce to you this weeks angler, Brett Robinson.

Q: Where were you born?

BR: I was born and raised in Wawa, Ont.

Q: Who played a role in getting you started in fishing?

BR: The people who played a role in getting me started in fishing include my parents Jamie and Carol-Anne, and grandparents Scott and Liz.

Q: As a youth, where did you fish and for what?

BR: Throughout my youth, I grew up fishing the many rivers and streams around Wawa for brook trout, steelhead and salmon. As well, in many lakes throughout northern Ontario chasing walleye in numerous camping trips with my family.

Q: At what age did you start fishing?

BR: I was definitely fishing using my own rod and reel by the age of three.

Q: How did you get into walleye tournament fishing and why?

BR: I started pre-fishing with my father by the age of four and progressed into fishing tournaments with my father and grandfather Vic by the age of seven. Tournament fishing is something I grew up only knowing and this has not changed. This also brings out my competitive personality through these tournaments.

Q: What was your most memorable fishing experience and why?

BR: Growing up fishing constantly, it is very hard to pick my most memorable experience. I am fortunate enough to have numerous memorable experiences but if I had to name just a few they would be all my top 10 finishes in walleye tournaments and including my two wins and winning a snowmachine in the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby. Along with the many adventures I have had landing trophy salmon and steelhead.

Q: List any Anglers that helped you learn more about fishing over the years.

BR: The angler that has helped me learn the most about fishing over the years is my father Jamie and grandfather, Scott, along with a few hard learned lessons with mother Carol-Anne. Also I’ve learned a lot through my fathers fishing friends (Terry Bernath and James Smedley) along with my friend and fishing partner Dylan Buckell.

Q: List sponsors and tournament finishes.

BR: My tournament sponsors include MirroCraft Boats, Evinrude, Yakima Bait, Young’s General Store, Simms, Onyx Outdoor Gear, Quality Food Hampers (Danny Hein).

I have two walleye tournament win’s as well as eight other top ten finishes. I have two top five Salmon Derby finishes and won the Salmon Derby Youth category three times. I also placed second in the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby.

Q: Biggest fishing supporters over the years (example, wife, family and friend(s)).

BR: My biggest fishing supporter over the years is definitely my family.

Q: What are some of your favourite fish you like to fish for and why?

BR: I am very fortunate enough to be able to fish for salmon, steelhead, brook trout, walleye, lake trout, whitefish, pike and bass, all while living in Wawa. However, my favourite species changes by the season with the opportunities that I have in my backyard.

Q: What is your favourite fishing technique(s) for Walleyes?

BR: My favourite fishing technique for walleyes would be bottom bouncing live bait.

Q: Why do you fish walleye tournaments?

BR: I fish walleye tournaments for the competition and excitement that comes during tournament days.

Q: Why did you agree to have your bio done?

BR: I agreed to have my bio done due to it being important to share experiences with other anglers.

Q: Any tips you would give to a new walleye angler looking at fishing the NOWT?

BR: The tips I would give to a new walleye angler looking at fishing the NOWT would be to never get discouraged because your day can change in a couple minutes. Enjoy your time on the water no matter where you end up finishing.

Q: What would be some of your greatest accomplishes over the years of fishing?

BR: My greatest accomplishments in fishing include my top finishes in tournaments. Also I have been very successful in guiding fishing clients. Almost all of my clients have landed a fish of a lifetime on these trips.

Over the years as an outdoors man myself, I have always enjoyed watching young people grow their knowledge in the outdoors to one day becoming true stewards and ambassadors of the outdoors themselves such as Brett.

I would like to take a moment to thank Brett for taking the time to share passion with us as I know that he is probably getting geared up for ice fishing this winter.
