NOWT Competitor Paul Ethier.

This past Saturday, I attended the Wellness Wisdom and Worth Show held at the St. Dominique Hall in Timmins.

The show was a lifestyle exhibition for the everyday person aged 45 plus.

One of the presentations, on the benefits of fishing, came from Northern Ontario Walleye Trail competitor and Albert’s Sports and Work Wear LTD. fishing pro staffer Paul Ethier.

During his presentation, Paul touched on a number of subjects, such as what is health, leisure activities that increase health, health benefits of fishing, physical benefits (outdoor activity, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and nutrition benefits) of fish, mental health benefits, social benefits, and the benefits that fishing brings to the community and local economy.

Paul also touched on the 2010 Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada, the 2010 Total Recreational Fishing Expenditures and All Active Anglers.

In his summary Paul talked how fishing is a sport that is highly adaptable and can be individualized to meet one’s moods, needs and desires.

References from Paul presentation were obtained here, here and here.

I won’t go into detail about his presentation since Paul did an exceptional job.

So good, that there was talk of Paul of doing his presentation this month at the Timmins Sportsman Show.

After talking with Paul on Sunday, he told me that he didn’t think he would be doing his presentation at the Schumacher Lions Club – 69th Annual Sportsman Show, April 23 and 24 at the McIntyre Community Centre/Rink.

This is disappointing news as I enjoyed his presentation and thought it would be something the local residents and visitors to the Sportsman Show would enjoy listening to.

If you would like to hear Paul’s presentation, please drop in to Albert’s Sports and Work Wear and let them know you would be interested in hearing it, or leave a comment at the bottom of this column.

Come on everyone, let’s all support the sport of fishing and a local angler help grow the sport.
